Single women opt for ownership

The majority of individual Canadian women buying homes are single and financially knowledgeable, according to a national poll by TD Canada Trust. It goes on to note they are most likely to opt for a condominium lifestyle.

The Ipsos-Reid survey focused on women aged 20-45, who have purchased a home as an individual rather than jointly with a spouse or common law partner. In the polled group, the average age at which they purchased their first home was 29, while 82 per cent of the survey group were single, four in five had no children and almost 50 per cent had a university degree.
Conducted among 713 women living in major metropolitan areas across the country, the on-line survey revealed that overall, condominiums are a popular option for individual female homeowners (42 per cent).
The figures come as no surprise to Dave Hepburn, sales manager with North Prairie Development.
"The survey is pretty well dead-on as far as my experience is concerned. We have two new (condominium) projects in Regina and I'd say maybe 50 per cent of buyers would fall into that category."
Hepburn's company is no stranger to the condominium market, being one of the pioneers in constructing projects in Saskatoon and the surrounding area. With major developments underway or nearing completion here and in Martensville and Regina, Hepburn has seen the appeal presented by condominium living steadily rising among single women.
"I think a big influence is probably the low maintenance aspects that come with buying a new condominium, which typically comes with a warranty. There're no headaches," he says.
Price would also play a role in many cases, although Hepburn says even higher-end condominiums have proven attractive purchases for single women.
The poll's conclusion that Canadian women find their home a sound investment, is echoed by Hepburn.
"Homes have increased in price across the board in Saskatchewan. But if you don't want to pay rent forever, you have to get serious about real estate sooner or later."
